Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on a cushioned throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; in field to left, monogram; below throne, labrys. ADM I, Series XII, 247 (same obverse die). Marcellesi 24. Price 2143. Struck in high relief and perfectly centered, a lightly toned piece of monumental early Hellenistic style. A few tiny marks, otherwise, good extremely fine.



The Alexander tetradrachms struck at Miletos under Demetrios I Poliorketes at the beginning of the 3rd century BC display a monumental early Hellenistic style, reflecting the grand ambitions of Antigonos’ dynamic and restless son. Particularly noteworthy are the unusually youthful depiction of Zeus and the strikingly thick cushion on which the king of the gods sits enthroned.
